Carbon Steel: The Workhorse for General Hydraulic Applications

For standard hydraulic cylinder barrels and pneumatic tubing, cold-drawn carbon steels like ST52 (DIN 2391), E355, and AISI 1026 remain our most frequently processed grades. They offer an excellent balance of machinability, strength, and cost efficiency.

Take a recent order for φ63×5 mm tubes used in agricultural equipment: the customer specified ST52+N (normalized) for consistent microstructure. During skiving, this grade responded predictably-minimal tool wear, stable chip formation, and a clean bore finish at Ra 0.8 μm after skiving alone. When paired with roller burnishing, we reliably hit Ra 0.3 μm without edge tearing. The key? Controlling sulfur content below 0.025% to avoid inclusion-related surface defects. We verify this via spectrometer analysis on every heat lot before machining begins.

Alloy Steel: When Strength and Fatigue Resistance Matter

For high-pressure systems (250+ bar), mobile equipment, or applications with dynamic loading, we often recommend alloy steels like AISI 4140, 42CrMo4, or E355+SR. These grades respond well to skiving when properly pre-treated.

One project for a construction machinery OEM required 4140 tubes quenched and tempered to 30–35 HRC. The challenge: hard enough to resist denting during assembly, yet soft enough to allow clean skiving without chatter. Our solution was a two-stage approach-rough skiving at lower feed, followed by a light finishing pass with polished carbide inserts. Surface integrity held at Ra 0.4 μm, and post-burnishing compressive stress measurements confirmed improved fatigue performance. We document these process parameters for repeat orders, so consistency isn't left to chance.

Stainless Steel & Special Alloys: Corrosion Resistance Without Compromise

For marine, food processing, or chemical environments, we process austenitic stainless grades like 304L, 316L, and duplex 2205. Skiving stainless requires different tool geometry and coolant chemistry to prevent work hardening and built-up edge.

On a recent run of 316L tubes for offshore valve actuators, we used PVD-coated skiving tools and high-lubricity, chloride-free coolant. The result: a uniform lay pattern with no micro-galling, Ra 0.5 μm after skiving, and full passivation compatibility post-machining. We also track intergranular corrosion risk by monitoring carbon content (<0.03% for L-grades) and avoiding excessive heat input during cutting.

Material Certification & Traceability: Non-Negotiable

Regardless of grade, every tube we ship includes mill test certificates (EN 10204 3.1), chemical composition reports, and mechanical property data. For critical projects, we can provide additional NDT reports or sample cross-sections showing grain flow alignment after cold drawing.
